The “Golden Boats”

The Nile was the main route of communication and travel throughout Egypt's ancient history. Travelers, whether kings, traders, soldiers, explorers or boaters, have all used it.

If no Dahabiya has ever transported ancient Pharaohs, the Dahabiya was the sailing ship of the 9th and 20th centuries, dedicated to pleasure and expeditions until the arrival of steamboats.

The dahabiya, with elegant lateen sails, was also formerly equipped with oars to compensate for the lack of wind, sometimes preventing it from sailing in the deep south.

Traditionally composed of cabins and a large suite, themselves covered by a deck fitted out with lounges, the configuration has not changed much, apart perhaps from the electricity which provides running hot water and thus adding to the comfort of this ancient modernity. Even today a dahabiya does not have an engine.

The Dahabiya were once richly decorated with gold, hence their name from the Arabic word Dahab, which means Gold. Dahabiya is also known as "the golden boats".
